Course Project: Business Analysis
Course Project, Part 6: Design Thinking
Professor Inge E. Milde
Learning Outcomes
After completing this project part, you will be able to:
• identify whether, and to what degree, your selected enterprise uses the concept of design thinking in their business design
• assess whether using design thinking would have helped the business be more successful in its business strategies
• form a belief as to whether the company approaches business challenges in a very deliberate and analytical manner or whether they are known for having a good intuition for business trends, needs, and patterns.
Overview
Over the last couple of decades, design thinking has moved from a concept mostly used by product designers to one that is applied much more broadly in business. There are at least two reasons why design thinking and the concept of lean startup have emerged as approaches used by progressive
companies:
1. You will see in the next unit that designing a business is very complex due to the number of possible variations. It is impossible to get all things right on the first several iterations
2. There is much more uncertainty in the marketplace, and the only way of knowing what will work and what customers will want is through experimentation.
Although lean startup approaches have been mostly associated with startup companies, the concept has moved into mainstream, more mature businesses. Design thinking has become an important philosophy for how to approach strategic direction.
