Your supervisor is unclear on the difference between continuous improvement or quality control

I am responding to your request regarding the memo to clarify the difference between "Continuous improvement" and "Quality Control". I am presenting my thoughts below.

"Continuous improvement" refers continuous efforts on part of the management to seek improvement, perfection or better ways to conduct tasks/activities or practices. In other words, it is a constant effort to improve the existing performance and lift the standards or benchmarks already set up by the firm towards betterment. It is the process of improving one's standards or benchmarks.

"Quality control" on other hand is a process to monitor the ongoing activities/tasks and processes to ensure that everything is going as per the predetermined benchmarks or standards set up by the organization and ensure that any deviation from those standards or mistakes/errors are being identified and rectified immediately. Quality control, thus, refers to adhering to the established benchmarks whereas continuous improvement is improving those benchmarks itself. Thus, continuous improvement is an innovative or proactive effort whereas quality control is a strict control or preventive measure.

Both the terms are extremely important as continuous improvement is concerned with seeking perfection and innovation where quality control is abiding by the set standards or benchmarks.
