Part I - Long Answer(s) - 250 words for each of your three selections (750 words total). This section is worth up to 20 points for each long answer, or 60 points total.

Pick three seemingly contradictory and/or perplexing and/or counterintuitive quotes from the TAO TE CHING

(edited by Stephen Addiss) and reflect upon them, in light of your understanding of Daoism, keeping in mind specific concepts such as wuwei , yin-yang, the dao and chi. Explore the possible meaning of each quote. Please analyze each quote individually and be sure to include the complete direct quotes you refer to with a page citation.

Part II - Essay (750 words) This section is worth up to 40 points total.

Confucianism and Daoism are two very different and seemingly opposing Eastern philosophies, yet they have coexisted for millennia. Compare and contrast these two schools of philosophy, their core tenets, and the lives of their respective founders.
