You are required to complete a 1500-word discussion paper on a topic covered in weeks 1 to 12 inclusive. The topics refer to various aspects of motor control and development, and how it can be applied to a variety of situations, including, and most pertinently, rehabilitation and sports performance. Your topic will be presented to you during the semester on Learnline and within Week 7 lecture. This written assignment should be based primarily on a review of relevant literature from primary resources (journals and textbooks). This assessment task is worth 40%of your total mark.

The topics are:

• Discuss how and why motor skills are studied and why motor skill learning researchers classify different motor behaviours as different motor skills.
• Processing information and making decisions are critical in many sports. Discuss the role of anticipation in sport and provide examples of this concept across different sport situations, as well as the limits of human anticipation.
• Discuss human attention and performance that explain some limits to human information processing in terms of stimulus identification, response selection and movement programming.
• Discuss how skilled motor performance is dependent on information from the human senses.
• Discuss motor control of brief actions in the context of motor program theory and evidence supporting motor programming.
• Discuss the role of speed, accuracy and coordination in controlling and timing movements.
• Discuss how individual differences influences the sports people select and the abilities they display across different sports or movements.
• Discuss how motor learning is defined, measured, what transfer of learning means and what motor learning curves represent.
• Discuss how the structure of practice/training influences motor skill learning.
• Discuss why augmented feedback is an important process in learning.
