Sociology

This assignment will determine how well you were able to pick up on what Mary Shelley hoped to convey through her book Frankenstein.

Criteria: Your essay must contain the following:

  • Demonstration of at least TWO themes or central ideas from the book and analyze their development over the course of the story, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide an objective summary of the text.
  • At least FIVE references to specific passages in the book to support your analysis and chosen themes. (These references should be used in the context of your discussion where they are relevant. I am looking for actual passages from the text here.) Explicit/Implicit Support - passages should support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
  • Write about how the author manipulates the Plot Diagram to change a reader's interpretation of the story. You should also write about how she uses the Methods of Characterization to impact the reader and affect their understanding of the book. (I am not asking you to list items of the plot diagram. I want you to identify how she uses them to alter your experience, understanding, emotions, etc. Identify how Mary Shelley uses them to manipulate her story and put her own unique spin on storytelling. Consider the exposition, most of the story has already happened up until that point and it is all a flashback. Why would that matter?

In addition to your essay you must also include a short statement in which you give yourself a grade for this project and why you think you have earned that grade, also list one way in which your essay might be improved.
