Annotated Bibliography ENGL 2332 Spring 2018 Professor Nighbert Annotated bibliographies are used by scholars for a number of purposes. Simply put, an annotated bibliography is a list of sources, each of which is followed by a brief note, or annotation (see below). For this assignment, you will select one of the topics you’ve developed in class. Using the library resources, you will find six acceptable sources that cover your topic, and help you discover more about that topic. Compile a bibliography of ?six carefully annotated? items that you have discovered in your database searches. In addition to your citation ?which should be in the correct MLA ?format, you will also write the following: 1. a short summary of the source, including a. What are the general ideas of the sources? b. What is the point of the source? c. What argument is the author making? 2. an evaluation of the quality of the source in terms of accuracy, authority, and overall usefulness 3. How the source is useful to you. Once you’ve compiled your annotations, you will write a 300-500 word introduction to the topic, based on what you’ve learned about the subject from the articles you discover. If the topic is controversial, you might outline the controversy, and explain how the bibliography is useful in understanding. If the bibliography is professional, you might explain how other knowledge-seekers might use the bibliography. The introduction is meant to orient your reader to the topic, and to help them understand why you are researching the subject. Student Name Course name Instructor Name Date Title your essay, followed by: An Annotated Bibliography In the first paragraph, the writer should tell why they selected this topic, and give us an overview of the subject, highlighting why it is of interest, and what led the writer to this topic. Try to engage your audience. Include any conclusions you can draw from your research, and the implications of those conclusions. Bablitz, Leanne. "Judging Ovid." ?The Classical Journal ?104.1 (2008): 33+. ?Literature Resource Center.? Web. 15 Nov. 2012. This article talks about Ovid’s life as a public official in Rome. The author of this article also wrote a book on the ancient Roman legal system. She talks about how a judge in Ovid’s position would have to be a person of strong character, and illustrates how Ovid was living up to what was expected of him as a member of the equestrian class. This is a useful article because it will help me show the contrast between Ovid’s common portrayal as a womanizer and writer of love poetry, and his life as a responsible Roman citizen and judge. Alshakkakee1 Hussein Alshakkakee ENGL-2327 26/02/2021 Aztec Creation Myths According to one of the Aztec Creation Myths by Crystalinks (2019), Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca observed a gigantic goddess floating above the waters of the earth, eating everything that the two gods had created. “They knew they must stop her, so they transformed themselves into two huge serpents and descended into the water.” (Crystalinks, 2019). The two gods decided to act alone and end this. When this news reached the other gods, they were furious because the two gods decided to act impulsively and deal with the goddess without their permission. However, it is clear that the two gods, Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca, did the right thing by tearing apart the goddess for feeding on all creatures on the earth. Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca acted impulsively, however; they considered the wellbeing of the majority over that of one immortal being. The gods valued the progress that they made during creation. However, the goddess became the enemy of progress by eliminating everything that they had created so far. According to the moral theory of utilitarianism, morality must involve increasing people's happiness and pleasure and decreasing the number of bad things (Nathanson, n.d.). This means that if an individual's actions promote happiness to many people more than it promotes sadness, then those actions are morally upright. From this theory, one can Alshakkakee2 conclude that the actions of Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca were morally upright. These two gods acted in a manner that promoted the happiness and satisfaction of the human race and the gods as well. The only person who suffered from this choice was the goddess, yet she was the one who caused harm to the creations of the gods. The gods may have been slightly displeased with the impulsiveness of the decision made by Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca to eliminate the goddess in this manner. However, they all accepted it and embraced the idea of creating a better dwelling place for humans. The other gods also did not banish the two gods because they eventually saw the sense in the impulsive decision that they made for all the gods. The fast action taken by these two gods saved the remaining humans and other creatures from death and suffering. These actions also spared the rest of the gods the agony and pain of witnessing the death of their creation. As much as it did not seem like the best decision at that time, the elimination of the goddess provided a chance for the human race to thrive on earth. The gods were also pleased that their creations were no longer being wiped away. The lesser evil was that for the goddess to provide for the creatures, she had to be fed human hearts. Compared to the achievements from that single controversial action, this was a slight inconvenience that had to be encountered to provide humans with a better life. Ashliman’s Blackfoot Creation and Origin Myths offers an interesting account of the Native American beliefs regarding the origin of Earth and Life itself. The book gives the reader a captivating and insightful reading experience as the book discusses the origin of various aspects, including the earth itself. The book comprises 7 chapters, each dwelling on how a particular aspect or event was created. One of the topics discussed by Ashliman (2019) is the origin of death. This position paper seeks to justify the Old Man and Old Woman’s decision of having people die forever, as opposed to dying for a short period and living once again. In the third chapter, Order of Life and Death, Ashliman (2) narrates how the Old Man and the Old Woman, the only two people on earth once upon a time, debated and agreed on how people should live. Aside from death, the two agreed on several things, including who should have the first say, the position of the mouths and eyes, as well as the number of fingers people should have on each hand, among others (Ashliman, 2). When it came to death, the two had to choose between two options, having people die forever, or having people die for four dies and Alshakkakee 2 then continue to live again. The Old Man initially concluded that that people should die for four days then live again, but the Old Woman stated that it is better for people to die forever. The Old Woman raised a valid point when she claimed it is better for people to die forever so that they would feel sorry for each other (Ashliman, 2). This will, in turn, bring sympathy to the world. Death is often referred to as the end of life as one's body ceases to function completely. Death is often followed by grieving and mourning as those who were close with the deceased strive to cope with the loss of their loved one. People have different ways of mourning their loved ones, and the grieving process tends to vary from one culture to another, however, they all involve a deep sense of sorrow and sympathy. This is clearly depicted when the Old Woman lost her daughter and had trouble coping with the loss (Ashliman, 2). Her grief and sympathy made her consider changing the agreement she had with the Old Man so that her daughter may live once again after being dead for four days. The Old Woman raised another valid point supporting the need for people dying forever when she states that there would be too many people on earth if they live always (Ashliman, 3). Without death, the human population will likely grow at an exponential rate as a result of the birth rate. A growing population will result in an increasing birth rate with more people engaging in procreation. Therefore, to maintain a sustainable population in the world, there should be a balance between death rates and birth rates. This justifies the need for people dying forever, compared to having people dying for only four days, as it is important to regulate the number of people on earth to decrease the chances of overpopulation. In conclusion, it is, indeed, better for people to die forever so that they would feel sorry for each other as this will, in turn, bring sympathy to the world. This is because death is often followed by grieving and mourning as those who were close with the deceased strive to cope Alshakkakee 3 with the loss of their loved one. Similarly, there would be too many people on earth if people live always. Without death, the human population will likely grow at an exponential rate as a result of the birth rate, resulting in overpopulation.
