Statistics Project - Part 2

This project is designed for a student to demonstrate their ability to:

1. organize and summarize data using a grouped frequency table;
2. construct graphic summaries of data;
3. compute descriptive statistics on a data set;
4. conduct a hypothesis test on a data set.

In this second part, you'll compute descriptive statistics on the data set you chose in part 1, and complete a hypothesis test.

Step 1: Take a Sample

• From the data set you chose in Part 1, randomly select 36 data values and enter them into a 6x6 table in your document - label this table with a description of what the data represents.

Step 2: Compute Descriptive Statistics

• Compute the mean and standard deviation for the sample of 36 values.

Step 3: Perform a Hypothesis Test

• Copy the statement you made about estimating the mean of the data set in Step 4 of Part 1.
• That statement is what you will base your hypothesis test on - you will test that prediction/estimation
  • State the level of confidence you have decided to use for the test
  • State the null H0 and alternative H1 hypotheses with BOTH words and symbols. (If you don't know how to get a symbol like μ or other symbols into your document file, please Google how to do it).
  • State whether the test is left-, right- or two-tailed
  • State whether you need to use the normal (z) or Student's t-distribution and why. If Student's t, also state the degrees of freedom.
  • Compute the test statistic and p-value.
  • In one or two complete sentences, explain what the p-value means for this test.
  • Use the above information to sketch a picture of this test on the curve below– the rejection region(s) and where the test statistic is in relationship to the rejection region(s).
    
  • Decision and Conclusion: Indicate the correct decision (“reject” or “do not reject” the null hypothesis), the reason for it, and write an appropriate conclusion about your claim using complete sentences. Include all three of the following

Step 4: Create, Complete, Save, and Submit your Part 2 Project File

• Create a file in your favorite word processing software like Word or Google Docs, or Pages.
• Save the file with the following format LastnameFirstnamePart2Spring21 (For example: SmithJoePart2Spring21)
• At the top of the first page, type your name and describe the data set you are analyzing.
• Include all the information requested in steps 1-3.
• Save the file as a PDF - this is the only file type accepted.
