DOCUMENT 1: PERSONAL STATEMENT (15 POINTS)

Compose a personal statement describing your immediate and long-term career and life goals, including an explanation of why these goals are appropriate and realistic in terms of your curricular, extracurricular, professional, and personal experiences.

  • When composing this document keep it personal, framing the discussion from your perspective (I, my, me).
  • A maximum page length for your Personal Statement is not specified as your goals and aspirations are unique to you. Take the space you need to effectively, and succinctly, define and discuss your goals. Historically, students have achieved this in 2-3 pages.
  • The document should be formatted using sound APA formatting practices: 1-in. margins on every side of the page, page numbering, double-spaced, and appropriately sized sans serif or serif fonts.

Personal Statement start: Growing up with a rough upbringing created a passion for children and their protection and safety. For myself those things were always questioned and survival was a must. I always understood that the way I thought about things was different from other children my age. I felt like I was strange because I processed information around me very quickly to figure out what I needed to do. All of these skills lead me to pursue my degree in psychology. The studying of the minds of people and how they interact, feel, and pursue their purpose intrigued me. I know that I am the right candidate for this school because my life and my service have prepared me for it. My vision couldn’t be clearer and I know my adopted mother who I lost in 2019 is watching me from above. I joined the military in 2002 right out of high school because I knew there were more opportunities waiting for me outside of my humble beginnings. I started out in Misawa AFB, Japan which was a different experience for me all together. I had to learn to adapt to my new military life and a different country where people didn’t look like me. I have traveled to over 10 countries since then being in the military and serving others which has developed my ability to put service and others before myself. My military service taught me to take my skills and merge them with effort and my purpose would generate. Learning skills like, time management and resiliency taught me to prioritize tasks and that giving up is never the answer. This is why I am excited about completing my bachelor and eager to get started on my masters in social work psychology with no breaks in between. Every challenge I have faced I have overcome and I know this new challenge will be no exception. With all that I have done I still believe my greatest accomplishment is my children. It is because of them I have continued to push myself beyond my limits because I know they are watching me. Thank you again for the opportunity and your attention to this matter.
