Running Head: VIRTUAL REALITY 1 Virtual Reality By [Michil Estfanous] ENG-102-ONR01 Professor: Harvey Rubinstein [HCCC] April 27, 2021 VIRTUAL REALITY 2 Introduction Imagine you are sitting in your own home and feeling extremely bored by your mundane daily schedule and doing the same work again and again. In such a situation, a normal human being would desire a vacation or a holiday from his daily work and life. But you could not have a vacation. It was always your dream of seeing the Northern lights in Ireland, and you were planning to go on vacation in Ireland. But your boss did not permit you the leave to go on a vacation. It is a very disappointing situation for anyone. Suddenly, you remember that you can at least stimulate the feeling of seeing Northern lights in Virtual reality. You take out your virtual reality headset, placed your mobile in it, and then visualize yourself in Ireland watching the Northern lights. We know it is not the real thing, but the virtual reality concept is designed in such a way that it tricks your brain into thinking that you are in Ireland and watching the Northern lights go pass by in real life. This is the power of virtual reality. This is how it can revolutionize human beings' lives and generate an idea about human beings perceive reality and alter their life experiences. What is Virtual Reality? Virtual reality profoundly affects human psychology and research. It is a marvel that can change an individual's impression of life and his general surroundings. Virtual reality permits a human to enter a virtual world and go about as a part of it. Later on in the future, the lines between genuine and what is only a piece of the virtual world would be blurred and combined. Human beings are said to have become such a part of technology that it is difficult to envision an existence without it. Virtual reality has given individuals gigantic control over controlling what he needs to see and what he does not. It is gradually covering each field of human existence. VIRTUAL REALITY 3 The popularity of Virtual Reality Virtual reality is one of the trendiest topics that is gaining popularity right now. Virtual reality is the phenomenon of integrating reality into digital life. Peter Rubin and Jess Grey, two journalists, working at Wired.com, explained virtual reality as "a technology by which computer-aided stimuli create the immersive illusion of being somewhere else" (Rubin and Grey) Stephen M. Lavelle described virtual reality in his book titled "Virtual Reality" as having four key components, " Four key components appear in the definition: 1. Targeted behavior: The organism is having an "experience" that was designed by the creator. Examples include flying, walking, exploring, watching a movie, and socializing with other organisms. 2. Organism: This could be you, someone else, or even another life form such as a fruit fly, cockroach, fish, rodent, or monkey (scientists have used VR technology on all of these!). 3.Artificial sensory stimulation: Through the power of engineering, one or more senses of the organism become co-opted, at least partly, and their ordinary inputs are replaced or enhanced by artificial stimulation. 4. Awareness: While having the experience, the organism seems unaware of the interference, thereby being "fooled" into feeling present in a virtual world. This unawareness leads to a sense of presence in an altered or alternative world. It is accepted as being natural." (Lavelle) Virtual reality is gaining immense popularity right now. Its popularity can be explained by the following analysis done by Justin Higginbottom, a journalist working in CNBC, about the boom of virtual reality during the pandemic. He found that, VIRTUAL REALITY 4 "A PwC report last year predicted that nearly 23.5 million jobs worldwide would be using AR and VR by 2030 for training, work meetings or to provide better customer service. According to a report by ABI Research this year, before the pandemic the VR market was forecasted to grow at a 45.7% compound annual rate, surpassing $24.5 billion in revenue by 2024. Virtual reality used within businesses is forecasted to grow from $829 million in 2018 to $4.26 billion in 2023, according to ARtillery Intelligence." (Higginbottom) Companies that are working in VR Virtual reality is the trendiest and most demanding technological innovation right now in the world. It is gaining immense popularity in the technological world right now. In current times, all the big and major technology companies right now in the world are investing in the technology of virtual reality in one way or another. They have realized that virtual reality is the current technology that will give them the most leverage to stay relevant in the market. By using virtual reality in their products and introducing new standalone products based entirely on virtual reality, they can manipulate the market to their benefit. Virtual reality has changed the landscape of the technology market. As discussed above, many companies are working actively in the field of virtual reality right now, and one such company is Facebook. As we know, Facebook is one of the biggest names in the tech world. Their popularity is seriously unmatched. And there are only a handful of companies that have proven to be a more significant success than Facebook. The company started as a mere social media site in 2004 but since then has evolved into one of the biggest technologically innovative companies right now in the world. The credit of this sudden business VIRTUAL REALITY 5 boom of Facebook can be credited to the creator and current CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. He made the company and transform it from a simple social media website to one of the biggest tech companies right now. Currently, Facebook has expanded its business by buying multiple other companies, such as bought mobile applications such as Instagram and WhatsApp. Virtual reality can transform how we perceive the world. It can genuinely change our outlook towards what is real and what can be seen through virtual reality. It is evident from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's comments on Virtual Reality that virtual reality has the power to transform how we think and how we experience different scenarios. Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook have always been one of the leading companies to work in Virtual Reality. During a live chat in berlin in 2016, he said, "Our mission is to give anyone the power to express anything they're thinking about or want to experience." (Smith) One such major company that Facebook has bought in recent years is the VR company Oculus. In March of the year 2014, Oculus was bought by Facebook incorporation for $2.3 billion. Oculus was founded in 2012 by Palmer Lucky, Brendan Iribe, Michael Antone, and Nate Mitchell. They introduced a virtual reality headset Oculus VR DK1 and Oculus VR DK2, before Facebook bought the company. Under the management of Facebook, Oculus is considered to be the leading company working in developing a virtual reality headset in the present day and age. Their Oculus virtual reality headset, especially the Oculus Rift, is considered the best virtual reality headset and a blueprint upon which all the future virtual reality technology depends. Oculus is also famous for working with Samsung to develop Samsung Gear VR, which is a virtual reality headset that works directly with Samsung Galaxy smartphones to give users an incredible experience of virtual reality VIRTUAL REALITY 6 by using just their phones. Thus, their involvement with Oculus has made Facebook a leading competitor in the field of virtual reality. Oculus is the company that has showcased the importance and seriousness of working in the field of virtual reality, and they enhanced the financial worth of virtual reality by introducing their virtual reality headsets. It can be argued that Oculus is the company that is responsible for making virtual reality a more mainstream concept. The importance of virtual reality and how slowly it has become a part of human life and their experiences can be analyzed by what Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said when asked by Steven Tweedie of businessinsider.com about how virtual reality has become a part of human beings daily life. He replied to Tweedie as "If you had asked me that when we first started Oculus, I would have laughed. But when I saw how real virtual reality can be, and that we can replace human vision with virtual vision, this can be the ultimate platform." (Tweedie) In addition to Facebook incorporation, many other companies are working tirelessly in the development and research of virtual reality. Amazon is one such company that found success in virtual reality and discovered that there is financial gain for them by researching and developing a virtual reality product. Amazon is relatively new in its race to introduce a virtual reality product. The work they have been doing in virtual reality is still new, and there is still a lot of secret information and mystery surrounding how they plan to incorporate virtual reality into their business landscape. But the information that we do have right now is that they are using the technology of virtual reality to develop new smart glasses which will work on voice enabling. They are planning to develop smart glasses, which will enhance the impact of their smart home automation and personal assistant device known as Alexa, which also works on voice commands. In addition to VIRTUAL REALITY 7 this, Amazon also has plans to invest more in buying and eventually developing virtual reality games in the future. Besides becoming a big part of companies like Amazon and Facebook, virtual reality has also started to become a major part of research and development in the organization and business of Google. In 2014, Google introduced its virtual reality headset, known as Google Cardboard (12 Tech Corporates Working On AR/VR). Although it is discontinued in March of this year, it has still provided Google a lot of momentum to succeed in the business of virtual reality in the future. Google Cardboard was a virtual reality platform. It was given the name of cardboard because of its look, which resembles a traditional fold-out cardboard viewer. It always gave the impression like someone cut this headset themselves from spare cardboard. It has the option of placing its mobile inside and can use its virtual reality applications with this headset. In 2017, Google moved further in their virtual reality development and introduced their virtual reality content platform known as Daydream. Although it is also discontinued right now, it was a revolutionary platform when it came out. Besides Google Daydream and Google Cardboard, Google has now planned to develop a fully independent headset that could work without any assistance from a mobile phone or a computer. Thus, Google is the company to look for in the future to develop virtual reality products. Benefits of VR Now that it is established that virtual reality is one of the most demanding and financially profitable fields of technology right now in the world, it is now important to discuss why it has become such an important field of research and doing business in. the popularity of virtual reality can be credited to many benefits of virtual reality as well as advantages of using virtual reality in VIRTUAL REALITY 8 our day to day life. There are some general benefits and advantages of using the technology of virtual reality. One of the most significant benefits of virtual reality is that it gives us a platform to experience the world differently (What Are the Positives & Negatives of Virtual Reality?). One person cannot experience every life experience in one lifetime. One person cannot travel everywhere globally, or she cannot play every sport or see every location in one lifetime. But all this does seem possible with the help of virtual reality. Just by wearing a virtual reality headset, a person can stimulate whatever life experience she wants to see. With the help of a virtual reality headset, she can see any location of this world. This is the closest she can get to feel the experience of visiting these places without ever traveling to these places. A person can use virtual reality to change his view on certain experiences. Virtual reality can emulate any scenario you want, so if you are afraid of doing something in real life, it can be simulated in virtual reality. For example, if someone is afraid of heights, she can use the stimulation of heights in a virtual reality headset to simulate the experience of standing on a very surface. This will help her to get over her fears of height slowly and gradually. This is why virtual reality can give extreme benefits to normal people. Another big benefit of virtual reality is that it has greatly improved our experience of playing games. There are now a lot of games present which can be played in the virtual reality landscape with the help of using virtual reality hand controllers. These hand controllers are great tools for emulating your hand movements in the virtual landscape and playing games using your complete body. Many application and game developers have introduced games, especially in the virtual reality landscape. Some traditional games have also been adapted to transform into virtual reality games. VIRTUAL REALITY 9 In psychology, virtual reality is also profoundly significant. Virtual reality contrarily affects the human brain. It is exceptionally advantageous in circumstances where a person has some mental pressure or sickness, and with the assistance of Virtual reality, these mental issues can be managed well overall and in extraordinary profundity (Sciforce). Virtual reality can give representatives of trauma and past accidents that can assist individuals with diminishing their psychological pressure and manage their previous injury by remembering that circumstance and figuring out how to react to it (Kubatek). Disadvantages of VR Even though Virtual Reality had numerous advantages, it has some disadvantages as well. One critical negative point about virtual reality is that it can sometimes get too diverting for individuals to focus on reality. It can have numerous unfriendly consequences for the brain psyche of the human mind. It is very easy for human beings to just easily confused by what is reality and what is fake. Spending too much time on virtual reality can very much distort the human psyche and can have a negative impact on human psychology. Another major negative aspect of virtual reality is that it is extremely expensive and costly to buy and make. Virtual reality technology is still very new, and currently, it is still in developmental stages. This means that there is still a lot of things that can be searched in this field. Just because this field is so new in its development, there has not been much work done in this field. This means that there are a limited number of technologies and technical persons, and experts available that can work in virtual reality and can help make new products. All these high demands of product and experts can sometimes increase their price. If the manufacturers who are making virtual reality products are spending money on their experts and getting technological parts for VIRTUAL REALITY 10 their part, they would want to get that money back, which they do by keeping the prices of virtual reality goods relatively high. This all results in high costs of virtual reality goods in the market. Source of Research To discover research material with respect to my topic of virtual reality's effect on human life and this world, I have looked through numerous sources all through the internet. I have discovered numerous sources that gave me exact directions to completely comprehend my point and build up notable thoughts regarding the said subject. My fundamental source of information has been articles posted on substantial and famous news destinations and qualified blog websites. Those came as genuine assistance to me when understanding the rudiments of virtual reality, its significance in this day and age, and what advantages and disservices it has on human life and this world. News stories were additionally useful to me while investigating the current advancements in Virtual reality. Other than news stories and blog entries, journal articles have demonstrated to be generally gainful to me in understanding this subject. Conclusion Thus, the above discussion can be summarized as that virtual reality is one of the most popular and one of the most demanding fields right now. Its popularity is increasing day by day. Right now, it is definitely in the starting phases of its development. There is so much more work that can happen in the field of virtual reality. It is still a very unexplored field of technology. Although there is still room for development left in virtual reality, it has already given many benefits to human beings. It has changed the way we human beings perceive reality. VIRTUAL REALITY 11 The above discussion presents a great argument to enhance the impact of virtual reality on human lives. It is discussed that virtual reality can help shape our future life experiences. By virtual reality, it means to incorporate human beings into the virtual and digital world. This means that with the help of virtual reality, human beings can genuinely emerge themselves into a digital experience. Many companies have adopted virtual reality. These companies are already making progress in their development in the field of virtual reality and also introduced some new virtual reality products. Among these companies, Google, Amazon, and Facebook are the most prominent examples. This discussion also deals with the different benefits and disadvantages of using virtual reality in real life. I have supported all my discussions with the help of different reputable and recognizable sources, which are scouted all through the internet and many other scholarly alternatives.
