Writing

The draft of your research paper should:

  • be about 7 pages of text (6 minimum) not including the Works Cited list
  • be MLA formatted, following the Hal Stevens model on p. 634 of our text (no cover page, no abstract, no subheadings)
  • use Times New Roman #12 font, 1" margins (left-margin aligned), and be double-spaced throughout.

Your text must thoroughly cite your research sources wherever you've drawn upon them. This means that nearly every paragraph of your paper should cite at least one source (whether for a quote or just paraphrased information), and that all the sources you've named in your paper should be listed in the final Works Cited (also MLA Formatted). Your Works Cited list should include at least 5 items, and each one should be named within the text of your paper.

You should include direct quotations throughout your paper--but not be too reliant on them, as your paper should be mostly your own writing. Most quotations should be short (1 sentence or less) but a few may be longer (2-4 sentences). See the guidance in our text about how to format these different types of quotes; we also covered these principles in the Unit 6 DQ1 Discussion Board.

The final draft you submit should be proofread with care and reflect your best writing skills.
