The army leadership level process provides further details of how the head of military teams control their team to ensure that they achieve security objectives. Defining Leadership An army leader is an individual who undertakes responsibilities that leads to the accomplishment of organizational objectives. Army leaders contribute to the character development, motivation, and inspiration of other soldiers (Alexandra, 2016). Leaders in the military are assigned various responsibilities based on their ranks. In this case, each leader focuses on building a team that adheres to the chain of command and accomplishes security missions (Alexandra, 2016). Decisionmaking and focus thinking are integral values that army leaders must possess to ensure mission success and achievement of goals set by the U. S defense agencies. Organizational leadership entails the skills and competencies attributed to a leader that leads to business success. In the army, leadership entails values and attributes that shape individual’s character. Army leadership is governed by a slogan denoted as BE-KNOW-DO (Alexandra, 2016). The term, ‘BE’ represents the leader’s qualities and character, which shapes decision-making skills (Alexandra, 2016). The term, ‘KNOW’ indicates leadership knowledge, which includes training, resource management, operations of technical systems, and organization. Army leadership requires immense know-how to be in a position to guide others using the same knowledge (Alexandra, 2016). The ‘DO’ represents the actions that are guided by the army leader. Leadership entails taking action that influences others directly and shows how things should be done. Army Leadership Levels Process The army has three leadership levels that differ in terms of scope, depth, and mix that define core leadership requirements. They include direct, organizational, and strategic leadership processes (Morrow, 2007). The direct level of leadership entails the first line leadership where the leaders have close interaction with the juniors. Leaders from army battalions, tactical units, and various divisions within the TDA organization meet directly to empower juniors/subordinates, develop plans, and implement policies that lead to the accomplishment of mission objectives (Morrow, 2007). The leaders meet face-to-face and discuss issues that influence soldiers, develop value, and ensure every army personnel adheres to military ethics. Leaders at the direct level require good communication and analytical skills that help in the decision-making process of their assigned missions. The organization-level leadership process is more complex than the direct level. This level incorporates input from high-ranking leaders in army brigade, corps levels, undersecretary of the army, and directorate from various TDA organizations (Morrow, 2007). Army leaders at the organization- level have additional responsibilities unlike at the direct level. Here the leaders have a mandate to develop long-term strategies, resources organization, dealing with unprecedented mission failure, long-term empowerment, and empower others. Leadership skills required at this level include interpersonal skills, negotiation skills, communication skills, and planning that overseas accomplishment of security objectives. The highest level of army leadership includes the strategic level of leadership, which influences civilian leaders and the military. The level consists of strategic leaders, who are responsible for running the army, developing strategies, developing policies, and structure for future mission and military capabilities (Morrow, 2007). The government and the highest level of DOD are highly involved at the strategic leadership level. The decisions made at this level influences the external security environment of the country as well as the safety of the civilian citizens. The skills required for strategic army leaders exhibit top-notch decision-making, interpersonal skills, and knowledge of security affairs (Morrow, 2007). The leaders’ decisions aim at enhancing negotiations, critical reasoning, and support actions that lead to longterm peace and security of the country. Army Leadership Requirement model The leadership requirements model entails the attributes and competencies that define an army leader. The attributes of an army leader entail individual character and traits that lead to a successful leader. These traits are categorized by character, presence, and intellect. The character of an army leader requires one to adhere to military ethos, values, and discipline that guides a service warrior (Alexandra, 2016). The presence of army leaders incorporates physical wellness, reliance, confidence, and military professionalism. The intellectual attributes of an army leader include the knowledge and abilities to make clear judgments, show expertise, interpersonal tact, and innovation. The competencies in army leadership are demonstrated through the leaders’ ability to lead, develop, and achieve goals. The leaders need to develop trust, influence others, and lead by example. Army leaders also exhibit their level of proficiency by creating a positive working environment, developing others, and steward professionalism. The end justifies the means and, in this case, and army leaders exhibit their competencies through the successful accomplishment of missions.
