Dear Your Honor,

I am writing this character reference for John Herrera. We have been friends for going on 20 years. We met when I moved back to Santa Barbara from Arizona; he was my next-door neighbor. Over the years, we became better friends, and he knew many of the same people I knew. I have watched John struggle with substance abuse for many years. John is a kind, loving, and considerate person with a big heart. He is not violent; his only actual flaw is his drug addiction.

Over the years, John has gotten into trouble, but if you look at his charges, they stem from his drug addiction. John is being charged with sales, but John never sold drugs; he would always make sure he had enough so that he didn’t run out and get sick. But I guess an officer can charge him with sales even when no deals are happening. The DA wants to give him 15 years in prison, and I will be so disappointed in our court system if they can't take the time and see that John needs treatment not prison.  Our society tends to treat drug addicts as criminals. Drug and alcohol addiction is a disease that needs to be treated by professionals that can teach addicts to learn how to live sober. Sending them to prison doesn’t benefit anyone.  John needs to go to a treatment facility where he can learn the skills to remain sober and prevent relapse—learning to maintain sobriety and developing skills to lead a happier, healthier, and more productive life in society and at home.

John is a good person hes not a criminal he just has an addiction to drugs that he needs help with. I hope you can be one of the people that can help John get over his addiction. He needs to be given a chance at living a life with out drugs. He has so much to offer this world, I hope you allow John the opportunity to spend the next few years working on his sobriety, in a facility that works with addiction everyday. SeHe deserves
