For this assignment, you are to become the manufacturer of a product by selecting one of your favorite things to eat during the spring and/or summer and doing the following:

  1. Select a recipe for one of your favorite things to make during spring and/or summer or find a recipe for one of your favorite things to eat during this time. Be sure that the recipe provides a minimum of 8 servings.

You may make an appetizer, main course, side dish, desert or even a special drink that you are fond of.

  1. Include the entire recipe (ingredients, directions, etc.) in your discussion post. Remember not to use links or attachments as I do not open them.

Your recipe must be made from scratch rather than from a boxed mix. You can use canned ingredients, dressings, etc. but you are not allowed to make a boxed cake or bowl of Jell-O.

  1. You will then provide the current cost for each individual ingredient that is used in your recipe.

Hint: you will need to give the cost of just the amount used in your recipe. For example, if you buy a dozen eggs for $3.00 but only use 4 eggs in your recipe, the cost of the eggs would be $1.00 [($3.00/12) X 4].

Hint: You can find the cost of most ingredients by going onto a grocery store website. They often break down how many servings there are in a package.

  1. Please provide the total cost of the ingredients (materials) to make the entire recipe.
  2. To calculate direct labor, make sure that you pay yourself the minimum wage of $15 per hour. Be sure to pay yourself for your prep time, bake time, etc.
  3. Factory Overhead for this assignment is $1.50 per direct labor hour.
  4. Add your total materials, labor, and factory overhead to arrive at the total cost to make the recipe. Then divide this total by the number of servings to get the price per serving.
  5. Reply to a fellow student’s recipe that you think would pair well with your own. Tell them why you think the two would pair well together and how working together might allow you to bring down the cost of both recipes.

Make this a fun exercise. Think back to the things you loved eating when you were a kid and the seasons changed from winter to spring and summer. I am looking forward to making many of your recipes.
