Assignment #3: Social Movements Addressing Class, Status, and Power Inequalities in Society Due Date: Monday May 10th Upload your assignment to Canvas by 12:30pm _____________________________________________________________________________________ Instructions: For this assignment you will analyze the websites of two social movement organizations that are seeking to address class, status, and power inequalities in society. Social movements represent collective action to fundamentally alter the status quo. They range in size, power, and scope and are often made up of what academics refer to as Social Movement Organizations (SMOs). Please choose two social movement organization websites that are seeking to address social inequalities from the list on the following page. Assignment Write-up: Browse through the websites and familiarize yourself with the articles, posts, blogs, images, etc. In your write up describe the history, mission, goals, and/or objectives of the two social movement organizations and answer the following questions for each: What issues/topics does the organization address and how does it seek to address them? Who are the organization’s members? (not the actual names of members but their demographics) Who are the organizations’ opponents? Where does the organization get its resources from (monetary donations, volunteers, etc.)? What are the symbols of the organization (artistic, visual, slogans, catch phrases, etc.)? Compare and contrast the two social movement organizations that you described. Do they share any commonalities? What are their differences? What challenges do you think these social movement organizations face in bringing attention to issues of social inequality? Plagiarism: It is very important that you do not cut and paste content from the websites into your assignment. This is plagiarism and you will receive a grade of “F.” You need to paraphrase in your own words the content you are reading. Do not put long quotes into your assignment. I am limiting you to no more than two quotes for the entire assignment (each quote can be no more than two lines long). How to Approach Paraphrasing a Website: Read through different sections of the website and then look away from the screen and write-up what you remember in your own words, as if you were telling a friend about what you read. Unless you have a photographic memory, what you write down will not be identical to the webpage. Construct paragraphs drawing on information from different sections of the website. In Text Citations of the Website: For purposes of this assignment, there is no need to use formal intext citations when referring to the information on the website. You can just write sentences such as – According to the Asian Americans Advancing Justice website…. Reference Page: You can just create a reference page with the two organizations and the website links. This page is not part of the total page count noted below.
