Completing the Application

GETTING STARTED

  • Open the file NP_AC19_EOM12-1_FirstLastName_1.accdb, available for download from the SAM website.
  • Save the file as NP_AC19_EOM12-1_FirstLastName_2.accdb by changing the “1” to a “2”.
    • If you do not see the .accdb file extension in the Save As dialog box, do not type it. The program will add the file extension for you automatically.
  • To complete this SAM Project, you will also need to download and save the following data files from the SAM website onto your computer:
    • Support_AC19_EOM12-1_Employees.xlsx
    • Support_AC19_EOM12-1_States.accdb
  • Open the _GradingInfoTable table and ensure that your first and last name is displayed as the first record in the table. If the table does not contain your name, delete the file and download a new copy from the SAM website.
  • PROJECT STEPS
  1. Create a linked table to the Support_AC19_EOM12-1_Employees.xlsx Excel file located in the default folder. The first row contains column headings. Use Employees for the linked table name and do not save the import steps.
  2. Create a linked table to the Support_AC19_EOM12-1_States.accdb Access file located in the default folder. Link to the StateAbbreviations table and do not save the import steps.
  3. Create a Navigation form in the Vertical Tabs, Left format. Add the ManagerEntry and PropertyEntry forms and the HomeInfo and ManagerScores reports to the Navigation form, in that order. Modify the Caption property of each navigation button to add a space between the words so that the captions read: Manager Entry, Property Entry, Home Info, and Manager Scores. Save the form using Navigation as the form name.
  4. With the Navigation form still open in Layout View, reorder the tabs so that the Manager Scores tab is third and the Home Info tab is fourth as shown in Figure 1. Save and close the Navigation form.

  1. Set the Navigation form as the opening Display Form for the database and use Homestead Partners as the Application Title. Do not close and reopen the database.
  2. Use the Database Documenter to document the properties and relationships in the current database. Export the report to the default folder as a PDF file using the default name doc_rptObjects.pdf. Save the export steps, saving the export as Export Documentation as PDF without a description. Close the Object Definition report.
  3. Use the Performance Analyzer to analyze all object types. When it finishes, read the ideas. At this point, you do not want to relate the linked tables or save the application as an MDE file, but the idea presented for the Zip field in the Properties table is worth exploring. Close the Performance Analyzer dialog box. Open the Properties table in Table Design View and click the Zip field. While it should remain a Short Text field given that some values start with a leading 0 (zero), the Field Size can be shortened, which will also improve performance. In the Field Size property for the Zip field, change 255 to 5, save the table, click Yes if prompted (no data will be lost because all current field values in the Zip field contain only five digits), and then close the Properties table.

Save and close any open objects in your database. Compact and repair your database, close it, and then exit Access. Follow the directions on the SAM website to submit your completed project.
