Creating a Newsletter with WordArt

  • *GETTING STARTED
  • Open the file SC_WD19_EOM7-1_FirstLastName_1.docx, available for download from the SAM website.
  • Save the file as SC_WD19_EOM7-1_FirstLastName_2.docx by changing the “1” to a “2”.
    • If you do not see the .docx file extension in the Save As dialog box, do not type it. The program will add the file extension for you automatically.
  • To complete this SAM Project, you will also need to download and save the following data files from the SAM website onto your computer:
    • Support_WD19_EOM7-1_Breakfast.docx
    • Support_WD19_EOM7-1_Reason.docx
  • With the file SC_WD19_EOM7-1_FirstLastName_2.docx still open, ensure that your first and last name is displayed in the footer.
    • If the footer does not display your name, delete the file and download a new copy from the SAM website.
  • PROJECT STEPS
  1. You work in the Community Health Department of Mission County Hospital in Salinas, California. One of your duties is to produce the quarterly newsletter, which is emailed to county residents and printed for distribution in the hospital lobby. You are preparing the current issue of the newsletter and need to add a new nameplate and format other graphical elements.
Convert the newsletter title "To Your Health" to WordArt using the Fill: Aqua, Accent color 1; Shadow style to start creating an eye-catching nameplate.
  2. Change the text wrapping of the WordArt shape to Top and Bottom. Resize the WordArt to a height of 0.7" and a width of 7" so it fills the space at the top of the newsletter.
  3. Change the font size of the WordArt text to 40 point. Change the text fill color by applying the Medium Gradient - Accent 4 preset gradient fill color (4th column, 3rd row in the Preset gradients gallery) to make the nameplate text look different from other headings in the newsletter.
  4. Apply the Warp Up text effect from the Warp section of the Transform gallery to draw attention to the nameplate. [MAC Hint: Apply the Can Up text effect.]
  5. Insert a Continuous section break at the beginning of the first body paragraph ("One of the best practices…quality of life.") to prepare for setting the article text into columns.
  6. Format the content after the section break in two columns, which is a common newsletter format. Change the column width to 3.3" to fit more content on the page. Insert a line between the columns to separate the text.
  7. Crop the picture of the backpack to remove the red lines. Rotate the picture about 20 degrees to the right, as shown in Figure 1, and then move it to an absolute horizontal position of 2.6" to the right of the Column and an absolute vertical position of 0.25" below the Paragraph so it fits to the right of the "Pack and Go" heading.

* Figure 1: Position of the Backpack Picture

The backpack picture appears to the right of the “Pack and Go” heading and is rotated about 20 degrees so that the top of the backpack points toward the upper-right corner of the page. The first two lines of the paragraph after the “Pack and Go” heading wrap around the picture.

  1. To call attention to an interesting point, copy the text from the file Support_WD19_EOM7-1_Breakfast.docx and then paste it into the text box in the second column of the newsletter using the destination styles.
  2. Resize the text box to a height of 1.6", and then move it to the bottom of the second column, as shown in Figure 2. Move the anchor of the text box to the body paragraph "Be prepared…out the door." to attach the text box to the paragraph. Format the text box by changing the fill color to Dark Teal, Text 2, Lighter 75%.

Figure 2: Position of the Text Box

  1. In the blank paragraph in the "Reduce Screen Time" section, insert text as an object from the file Support_WD19_EOM7-1_Reason.docx without copying and pasting the text. Delete the extra paragraph mark to save space on the page.

Your document should look like the Final Figure on the following pages. Save your changes, close the document, and then exit Word. Follow the directions on the SAM website to submit your completed project.
